Digestion issues in Seniors Could Lead to More Serious Problems

Many seniors miss eating certain types of foods that they once enjoyed at a younger age without any abdominal discomfort. Among the top of the list are spicy foods, leafy greens, and tomato products. Sometimes caregivers may be tempted to offer these foods to their clients on special occasions, perhaps during the holidays, as long as they only have a small amount. When discomfort does arise, most people reach for Pepto-Bismol or Tums to counter act symptoms of gas, bloating, heartburn, etc.

Unfortunately, most caregivers are not aware that they may be doing more harm than good in these practices. Many of the symptoms of abdominal discomfort may stem from poor digestion health. When the digestive system is not functioning properly there is an increased risk of allergic reactions to foods that were once absorbed by the body.

Digestive health concerns are complicated and cannot be properly diagnosed by a caregiver. It is important that caregivers take note to these symptoms and their triggers. Have these notes available for the client’s other caregivers, family, and doctor. If left untreated, permanent digestive issues have been linked to malnutrition, illnesses, infection, diseases, and even cancer.
