I’ve been thinking about Scaling Your Home Care Business.

Last week I was in Seattle, Washington for the 2024 Home Care Association of America National Conference. It’s always wonderful to be there with 600 other Home Care leaders to share ideas, acquire new knowledge, and make new friends.

While all of the general sessions are wonderful, and we experienced some terrific breakout sessions, there was one that stood our for me.

Jeff Wiberg, the retired CEO of Family Resource Home Care, a past-president of HCAOA, and a former member of the Home Care CEO Forum Top 5% Mastermind Group gave a terrific presentation. His title; Scaling UP: Lessons Learned over a career in Home Care.

It’s always wonderful to get a new dose of Wiberg Wisdom, and this conference was no exception. Jeff gave us Seven Specific Lessons that he has learned in his career.

  1. What got you here is not going to get you there.
  2. Change the definition of KPI
  3. Simple, repeatable, consistent processes
  4. Cash is King
  5. Multilocation for scale
  6. If you are not AT the table, you are ON the menu.
  7. It is lonely (at the top of a Home Care company)

Jeff shared with us personal and humorous stories and examples of his experiences over the years in growing his company from under $2 million in annual revenue to over $120 million.

He summed up his presentation with this conclusion:

  • Be ready for change
  • Make Key Performance Indicators intuitive
  • Make processes repeatable
  • Cash is king … keep in flowing
  • Go multilocation to grow to scale
  • Find your voice in the industry
  • Get support from others around you.

Other Insights and Strategies from HCAOA 2024

This year’s HCAOA conference was loaded with valuable insights and strategies to grow your business. The opening keynote speaker, John O’Leary shared his amazing story of being burned over 100% of his body, and his journey to recover.

There were also some wonderful breakout speakers and panels:

  • Insights for Hiring Caregivers with Rachel Gartner, Carework
  • Integrating Home Care and Care Management – a panel led by Andrea Cohen and featuring Steve BarlamCasey RausinAbigail Wegman, and Catherine Vergara
  • The Home Care Technology Forum, with Ginna BaikAlon BrennerJeff Salter, and Matt Smith
  • Hiring, Performance, and Termination Issues with Bob King with Legally Nanny.
  • The KPIs I used to Build a $20.4 Million agency with Emily Isbell from EI & Co.
  • From Data to Dollars: Maximizing Revenue with Benchmarking with Todd Austin with Activated Insights, and a panel of Daniel GottschalkMatt Kroll, Aaron Stapleton, and Sara Wilson.

I came home with pages of notes from these presentations, and some magic memories of great conversations with friends and thought leaders in Home Care.

If you are not a member of HCAOA, I encourage you to join. And I hope to see you at next year’s conference in Dallas, TX.
